Nigeria and Music

Nigerian music has become a big deal in the global entertainment scene and it is gradually gathering momentum to become the biggest in the world. Imagine a Nigeria without music. How will it be? Exciting, colourful, peaceful, dull or boring? The answer is obvious, isn’t it? Music which is otherwise referred to as joyful noises is a necessity in a world full of tension, bloodletting, fear, sorrow and despondence. Music helps to lift people’s spirits when they are sad. It helps to calm frayed nerves. It heals, gladdens, and excites.

The music of Nigeria includes many kinds of Folk and popular music, some of which are known worldwide. Styles of folk music are related to the multitudes of ethnic groups in the country, each with their own techniques, instruments, and songs.

Nigeria and Movies

Nigerian cinema is undoubtedly Africa’s largest movie industry in terms of value and number of movies produced per year. Its rapid growth from the 1990s and 2000s till now ensured it became the second largest film industry in the world in terms of number of films produced annually. Nigerian cinema have evolved in a big way with their recent return to the big screens and international scenes. We cannot also ignore the rich mix of culture, entertainment, and memorable moments and scenes that some Nigerian films have provided in the past years.

The cinema of Nigeria, often referred to informally as Nollywood, consists of films produced in Nigeria; its history dates back to as early as the late 19th century and into the colonial era in the early 20th century.

Nigeria and Fashion

Fashion is a popular practice, every individual has a sense of style which best describes their personality. Fashion is a never-ending craze. Society has built a world around fashion and so the industry is unsurprisingly booming for many workers in the realm. In Nigeria, the love for fashion originated as a lifestyle choice as its people are member of a variety of cultures. Rich in fabrics, such as asooke, ankara and unique materials that birth breath-taking pieces, fashion designers are usually very well patronized.

For anyone who thinks the evolution of Nigerian fashion has come to an end, it might come as a surprise to find it might just be beginning. The phenomenon is that globalization has come to stay and no less so in fashion.

Nigeria and Comedy

Comedy, originally of a theatrical genre, was simply described as a dramatic performance. There is no arguing the fact that stand-up comedians have existed in Nigeria from time immemorial, in the form of village spokesmen, especially at ceremonial occasions. They usually add colour to social occasions, to the admiration of those gathered for such events. It is pertinent to note here that the comedy business is not the exclusive preserve of male comedians as some female stand-up comedians have also made remarkable impact in the industry.

Comedy in Nigeria can now be said to be a profession as professional stand up comedians have made a good living out of it. Nigerians are naturally funny but it takes a very talented comedian to make a Nigerian laugh.
